The latest speech made by the 16-year old Greta Thunberg at the United Nations in New York made the headlines of every news source. It followed climate strike protests worldwide, and saw participation of millions of people.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, however did not seem convinced with the young Thunberg. While speaking at the energy conference in Moscow, Putin said, Greta was unaware that the modern world is “complicated and complex”.
“I may disappoint you, but I don’t share everyone’s enthusiasm about Greta Thunberg’s speech. You know, the fact that young people, teenagers, pay attention to the acute problems of the modern world, including ecology, that is right and very good. We need to support them. But when someone uses children and teenagers in their own interest, it deserves only to be condemned.”
Furthermore, Putin added that people in Asian and in African countries are aspiring to be as wealthy as the people in Sweden. He questioned, how can this ambition of such countries be achieved? By making use of solar energy which is available in abundance in Africa? The 66-year old President asked if anyone had explained the cost of such a provision. He further added that this provision is not accessible to them, however they still wish to live like the people in Sweden and nothing can stop them.
Putin added in his speech, that the ideas of developing renewable energy sources need to be supported, but on the other hand one also needs to be realistic.
