According to latest reports, Twitter has announced to hide tweets of world leaders and politicians that break the rules of the media website. Based on the latest reports, tweets from popular government officials which were left online, but do not adhere to the platform’s rules, will now be hidden behind a notice.
In the wake of the situation, the company said it had not clearly communicated many of its decisions made in the past. However, the new notice will be observed for tweets sent after June 27.
The new announcement was immediately addressed by critics, saying the company did not enforce its rules evenly. According to the opponents, Twitter allowed politicians to break rules on incitement, harassment, and abuse. Previous reports by Twitter, however, indicate that Twitter defended some of the cases, by saying that such tweets were “newsworthy.”
One such incident would be of a tweet of Donald Trump from September 2017. In the controversial tweet, Trump had commented, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at UN. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!” This statement by Trump was interpreted as a threat to North Korea by many readers. Although Twitter claimed the post newsworthy, no such indication was observed on the Twitter app or website.
In the wake of the new announcement by Twitter, officials did not say if their decision was based on the influence of any particular politician. However, as per the latest development, tweets behind the new notice will no longer appear in search results. Furthermore, they will not be promoted by Twitter’s algorithm.
