In another public jibe, Donald Trump attacked London Mayor Sadiq Khan owing to the growing number of killings in the capital city. With five attacks in less than 24 hours, Trump addressed Khan as a ‘national disgrace’ and ‘disaster’. “He is a national disgrace who is destroying the City of London!” posted Trump from his Twitter account. In another post, Trump confirmed his hostility to Khan by posting, “LONDON needs a new mayor ASAP. Khan is a disaster- will only get worse!”
According to reports, Khan has escalated emergency services in the capital city. “Violent crime has no place in our city, and there’s no higher priority for me than Londoner’s safety,” Khan tweeted from his account as a response to the recent killings.
A statistical source revealed the number of killings in London was projected far less than the high murder rate in some of the major cities of the United States. As per the source, London witnessed 132 murders in the last year, with a homicide rate of 1.5 per 100,000 residents in the capital. This rate was far less in comparison to the homicide rate in New Orleans, St Louis, Detroit, and Baltimore.
According to the statistics, 205 people were murdered in St Louis, Missouri in 2017. This was reported to be far higher than London murders happening in just one of its 32 boroughs. Even in Washington DC, the murder rate was reported to be 11 times higher than London.
Verbal attacks by US president to London’s Mayor, however, have happened previously too. Most recently during his three-day state visit to the UK when he called Khan a “stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London.” The mayor had returned by commenting, the UK should not be “rolling out the red carpet for Mr. Trump during his visit.”
