Latest results compiled by a music royalty body, PPL revealed the most-popular artist played in the UK in 2018 with Ed Sheeran reaching the top. PPL is a UK-based music licensing company which also owns performance rights organization. According to reports PPL monitored the music played in pubs, clubs, on the TV and radio in the UK. Sheeran topped the list despite not having released any music. Reports suggest Sheeran soared to the top for the third time in the past four years. While Calvin Harris came second, Little Mix followed third after Sheeran.
According to PPL, some songs had a long-after life on the radio after their original release. One such example is Portugal. The Man’s Feel It Still which was released in 2017, but still maintained a position on the charts and made it to the biggest radio hit of the year.
PPL reports, nine of the top 10 most-played artists were British, with Pink, as an unexpected entry. Pink’s single What About Us made it to the charts for the second time in a row. This record has been observed only once before, with Maroon 5’s hit single Moves Like Jagger in 2011 and 2012.
A new entry this year was by George Ezra, both his singles Paradise and Shotgun made it to the charts. The pop star, Jess Glynne’s single These Days was voted as the second most played song on the charts. Glynne has maintained a record by being on the top for the past five years, with only one year being the exception.
Moreover, in 2018 the majority of the most-played artists were women artists. Reports allege the PPL society collected £246.8 million on behalf of 105,192 performers, including right holders over the past year.
