The title of PFA Players of the Year for the 2018-19 season was bestowed on Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal. The center back player Dijk, was awarded the trophy of Player of the Year at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday evening with fellow, Arsenal’s football forward Vivianne Miedema as PFA Female Player of the Year.
Through a vote casted by fellow players, Van Dijk, 27, beat Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane and Eden Hazard. Reporters also suggest that Van Dijk won the support of readers and pundits who ultimately contributed to his ultimate win. Similarly Miedema, 22, beat Steph Houghton, Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-yun to win the title of the year.
Miedema received special recognition for her performances this season that saw Arsenal win the first Women’s Super League (WSL) title since 2012 earlier on Sunday. Miedema is also the top scorer in the WSL this season. She has scored 22 goals and provided 10 assists in her 19 appearances. Moreover, a record of all her competitions, she also has a repute of being a prolific striker with 39 goals in 46 appearances to her credit. Van Dijk, on the other hand, has been one of the key players in Liverpool’s ongoing title challenge this season. He played in every one of their Premier League fixtures. Dijk was signed in January 2018 from Southampton and allegedly for a world record fee for a defender of £75m. The ceremony named Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Georgia Stanway as young players of the year.
