Monkey with human brain genes

A collaborative effort of researchers from the Kunming Institute of Zoology and University of North Carolina have implanted human brain genes into monkeys. The team has created a transgenic model of monkey in an attempt to understand evolution of human cognition.

The gene MCPH1 plays an eminent role in fetal brain development in humans. Instilling the gene into monkeys, it improved their performance in tests based on short-term memory, which involved experiments with colors and blocks pictures. Their reaction time also allegedly enhanced in comparison. Anyhow, the monkeys did not develop bigger brains.

However, medical ethics have doubted the morality of the latest biomedical experiment in China. It has been doubted if the Chinese with their technological edge have been reckless with their experiment of modifying primates genetically.
