In a technological revamp, the retail giant, Walmart is replacing various mortals’ tasks to robots across its stores in the US. These machines are assigned to carry out menial tasks like cleaning floors, scanning inventory, unloading trucks, scanning boxes, etc. Putting the human intelligence to better use of enhancing customer service, the working associates will be entrusted with more ‘social’ jobs like selling merchandise and serving customers.
In the light of the new development, Walmart announced that 300 shelf scanners, 900 pickup towers, 1,200 conveyor belts and 1,500 floor cleaners will join its existing team of associates. Amidst frequent wage hikes and fierce competition for talent in the global retail sector, Walmart’s robot revamp can be seen as a clever tactic to keep labor costs to a minimum.
